Preparation & Momentum | Signs of Life
Our active prop house.
By Farmer Pat Moote:
March is just around the corner. The dark days of winter are growing longer and brighter. The buds on the perennials are swelling, the prop house is filling up, and the first beds are prepped for planting. Just like that, we’re back!
Like most seasons, I’m not sure I am completely ready. It’s not that I’m unprepared, either literally or emotionally, it’s just a conflicting time of year for farmers. I am excited for another season filled with potential, but there is always this odd feeling that this will finally be the season when all my seeds inexplicably don’t work.
Fortunately, we’ve crossed that hurdle. The first seedlings are already poking out of their cell trays. We have over two dozen varieties seeded, and so far, things are looking good. As those first little babies emerge, the anxiety dissipates and the excitement takes over. Excitement for a new season with new potential. We have more varieties scheduled than ever before. New varieties mean new learning opportunities for us on the farm and fun new ingredients for the restaurant to experiment with.
As the season begins to unfold, I’m reminded why this cycle never loses its magic. Every spring brings its own challenges, surprises, and victories, but it also renews the sense of purpose that keeps us doing this work year after year. With fresh seedlings, new varieties, and a whole season of possibility ahead, I’m stepping into spring with optimism and a healthy dose of curious anxiety for whatever comes next.
Projects happening around our property. Pruning the orchard, refinishing floors, seeds germinating and building the chicken tractor.
