All Eyes On The Corn
by Sarah McArthur
This is the time of year where the farmer's body starts experiencing phantom Fall. It starts trying to slow down. The mind loosens its grip. Autumn is around the corner right? But then the temps jump back up and the weeds continue to grow as fast as the vegetables. Today just as we were going to let out a deep sigh of relief, believing we were safe to say the enjoyment of the fruits of our labor was nearly imminent, the black birds decended. Threatening to take the corn.
There is so much you can do in farming and yet so little that can be done sometimes. One way or another we are always reminded that we are at nature's mercy, and willing or not we must abide by her laws. We battle these blackbirds every season and in order to defeat them we will inevitably pull the corn too early or too late. However, there is comfort in experience. Every year we end up with more than enough( dare we say an abundance) golden 8- Row Flint corn, despite the pressure of the birds.
